"... in the ruins of Vitebsk. Seen in the background are buildings with demolished interiors but with walls still standing, a common feature of the present urban landscape in Byelorussia. The garden here flourishes on the site of a completely razed building. In the city of Vitebsk (present population 62,000) this year about 20,000 such vegetable gardens, comprising 3,800 acres, were planted in the urban ruins. Similar vegetable gardens were observed in Polotsk, Orsha, Borisov, and Minsk. Except for potatoes, the seed planted in these gardens came chiefly from UNRRA sources."
