Series consists of numbered, unnumbered and only code cables (incoming and outgoing), clear cables, correspondence (correspondents include Richard Nixon), memoranda, United Nations documents, meeting minutes and verbatim reports, handwritten notes, drafts of correspondence and reports, speeches, maps, and photographs documenting Ralph Bunche's tenure at the United Nations. Of special note are personal papers of Ralph Bunche, which include publications; drafts; and handwritten notes on meetings and social events, childhood and family reminiscences, commentaries on racial incidents in the U.S. and notes exchanged with the Secretaries-General. Also included in the series are some original papers of Dag Hammarskjold. Bulk of the materials date from 1947-1971. Subjects include peace-keeping efforts in the Congo; Bahrain; India and Pakistan; Yemen; Cyprus; and the Middle East, including the Palestine Mediator's Mission (1948-1949), the Suez crisis, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), and the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF). Other subjects include the International Employees Loyalty Board hearing on Ralph Bunche (1954), the International Atomic Energy Agency and conferences on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, Secretary-General meetings, Vietnam, the Survey Group on Overseas Offices, travel, and personnel cases. Correspondents include Secretaries-General Dag Hammarskjold and U Thant.
