Series consists of the signed petition sheets of nearly one-million individuals that were presented to Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs Diego Cordovez by Ambassador Zarif of Afghanistan. Petitions were presented to Cordovez sometime in July, 1982. This series represents a sample from the original four-foot accession. Petitions feature decorative drawings and thumbprints above each signature.

Records in this series relate to United Nations diplomacy in Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Subject files document diplomatic relations between Soviet Union and Afghanistan from 1980-1984, the Secretary-General's visits to Pakistan and Afghanistan (1981), the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1981 and diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran. Files also pertain to the Iran/Iraq war, the early regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Security Council meetings and resolutions pertaining to the Iran/Iraq war, the situation in the Persian Gulf and the use of chemical weapons. Documents in the series include correspondence, press briefings, code cables, reports, statements and notes.
Series documents the interactions of Brian E. Urquhart and other senior UN officials with leaders of African countries excepting Congo. Also documented is UN involvement in peacekeeping in the Western Sahara region (1980-1984), humanitarian efforts in Nigeria and Biafra (1968-1970), and the refugee crisis in Rwanda and Burundi (1963-1966). Arranged alphabetically by country or region in the following order: Africa (general information), Biafra, Burundi, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Nigeria, Rwanda/Burundi, Somalia/Horn of Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zaire and Zambia. Series consists of correspondence, notes, periodicals, and invitations to special functions relating to missions to Africa, Asia and the Far East including the missions of UN Representative Frank Graham and Ambassador Gunnar Jarring to India and Pakistan. Other subjects include Indonesian nationalism, Gambia, and UN relations with South Africa. Correspondents include Secretary-General U Thant, Special Officer J.F. Engers, Ambassador Gunnar Jarring, and UN Representative Frank Graham.

Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs (1958-1972: Bunche)
Series consists of letters, clear and code cables, maps of Rwanda-Burundi, photographs, newspaper clippings, memoranda, press releases and reports relating to UN missions and commissions in Africa. The bulk of records (1.5 linear feet) pertain to the UN trust territory of Rwanda-Burundi, and include background information, administrative issues, internal security and border problems. The rest of the documents relate to the assistance programs, border incidents and refugees in other areas of Africa, such as Cameroons, Togo, Somalia, Ethiopia, Mogadiscio, Libya, Angola, Rhodesia, Mozambique, Guinea, Ivory Coast and Congo. Correspondents include Executive Assistant to SG Andrew Cordier, Under-Secretary-General in charge of Congo Godfrey Amachree, Under-Secretary-General for Trusteeship and Information from Non-Self-Governing Territories Dragoslav Protitch and Secretary-General U Thant.

Series consists of correspondence, photographs, maps, press releases, statements by secretary-general, UN documents, mission reports and records of meetings relating to UN missions and commissions in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, West New Guinea, and Malaysia. Documented are activities of the Security Council sub-commission on Laos, the mission of Special Representative of the Secretary-General Nils Gussing to Cambodia, the mission of Baron Back-Friis to Cambodia/Thailand, UN administration of West New Guinea and mediation between the Netherlands and Indonesia, UN assistance to Indo-China, and the establishment of Memorial cemetery in Korea.

Series consists of materials documenting the work of the UNCC (United Nations Co-Coordinator), UNDOF (United Nations Disengagement Observer Force), and UNTSO (United Nations Truce Supervision Organization). UNCC and UNTSO materials consist of incoming and outgoing numbered code cables; UNDOF materials include incoming and outgoing numbered code cables; military staff lists; casualty and board of inquiry reports; country files (Austria, Canada, Iran, etc.); incident reports and strength and location reports. Subjects include the Christian Armed Forces and Lebanese Christian fellowship; IDF withdrawals from Lebanon; Lebanese border crossings; the crossing of the Alpha line; mine accidents; and the Austrian patrol.
