Series contains records pertaining to the Secretary-General that are personal in nature or that are related to matters of importance in the Secretary-General's non-professional obligations. Included in the series is correspondence with VIPs, personal friends of the Secretary-General and persons who made his acquaintance on official trips and at official public events. VIP correspondence includes invitations to attend cultural and social events and contains letters in which people express their views of the United Nations and of world situations. VIP correspondence also includes letters exchanged between the Secretary-General and former Secretary-General U Thant. The series also includes cables sent to the Secretary-General notifying him of the deaths of important persons, friends, acquaintances, persons within the United Nations system and persons associated with United Nations-related organizations and groups; official letters of condolence sent by the Secretary-General to relatives and friends of notable persons recently deceased; and press releases concerning the Secretary-General's messages or actions taken in response to the death. Included in the series are files containing congratulatory messages and well wishes, many from the general public, to the Secretary-General upon his election to the post. Records also pertain to Mrs. Leia Maria Boutros-Ghali, to the Secretary-General's residence and to the security of the Secretary-General's personal transportation. Also documented are honors and titles offered to the Secretary-General by universities and other institutions and organizations. Records in the series consist of correspondence, faxes, press releases, invitations, cables, messages, greeting cards and notes.

Series documents United Nations external relations with governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil, religious and academic institutions, the general public and United Nations Information Centres (UNICs). Records documenting relations with governments include talking points (summaries informing the Secretary-General of events of current import to government representatives and individuals). Delegations files include records that document within member countries United Nations involvement in the following: human rights abuses and humanitarian needs, military activities and conflict resolution, political negotiation and matters related to elections, position appointments, security of United Nations personnel and natural disasters. Records include correspondence between the Secretary-General and ambassadors, heads of state and government officials as well as reports to the Secretary-General of permanent, fact-finding and exploratory missions. Of particular interest in delegations files are records pertaining to the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict; peace talks between the government of Guatemala and the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca; the Governors Island Agreement between President Jean-Bertrand Aristide of Haiti and General Raoul Cedras; and events in El Salvador, including the Peace Agreement (1992) signed between the government of El Salvador and the Frente Farabundo Marti para la Liberacion Nacional (FMLN). Records documenting relations between the United Nations and non-governmental organizations include correspondence and reports of meetings with the Secretary-General. Records documenting relations between the United Nations and religious institutions include correspondence regarding matters of mutual interest, acts of religious violence and material related to religious ceremonies and events held in connection to the activities of the United Nations. Records pertaining to academic institutions include invitations for the Secretary-General to speak or attend events at educational institutions as well as material describing projects and collaborative efforts between the United Nations and educational institutions. A significant number of files consisting of correspondence and petitions addressed to the Secretary-General are in Arabic. Series includes records pertaining to the Secretary-General's daily agenda of activities. Documented are the Secretary-General's extensive travels during the entirety of his tenure. Trip files consist of official itineraries and program booklets of the Secretary-General's visit; press releases regarding the Secretary-General's activities while on trips; background briefings and notes on topics of importance to groups and organizations with whom the Secretary-General met; reports and talking points of meetings the Secretary-General attended; seating arrangements of formal dinners and meetings the Secretary-General attended; lists of persons accompanying the Secretary-General on trips; programs of cultural performances attended by the Secretary-General; records pertaining to air and ground transportation (flight information, vehicles, motorcades and convoys used on trips) of the Secretary-General and party; records pertaining to the travel of Mrs. Leia Maria Boutros-Ghali; and records documenting gifts given to the Secretary-General on official trips. Trip files also contain code cables and cryptofaxes exchanged between the United Nations headquarters and the Secretary-General and party (including Jean Claude Aime, Ismat Kittani, Mourad Wabha, Lisa Buttenheim and Marrack Goulding). Also included in the series are files which pertain to persons and groups that were granted meetings and audiences with the Secretary-General. Other files in the series pertain to invitations received by the Secretary-General to attend public and private events; to attend celebrations and commemorations of non-profit or private organizations; to participate in meetings of non-profit or private organizations; and to attend official meetings of foreign governments. Records also identify persons who attended events as representatives of the Secretary-General. Files pertaining to messages include the text of the Secretary-General's messages offered to various groups, organizations and individuals for use at public and private events; text of messages published in books, periodicals, or distributed on audio media; text of messages the Secretary-General used for events and commemorative occasions at United Nations headquarters and messages offered to organizations within the United Nations system; and United Nations press releases pertaining to international news events for which the Secretary-General or the Spokesman for the Secretary-General released a public statement. The Secretary-General's trip logs, logs of meetings with heads of state and government, and records pertaining to socials hosted by the Secretary-General are included in the Kofi Annan fond. Series contains records documenting United Nations activities to protect human rights, to maintain international peace and security, to address international terrorism and to address concerns important to women, disabled persons, youth and the aged. Included are files pertaining to human rights abuses in Iraq, Kuwait, Iran, the former Yugoslavia, Guatemala, Cuba, East Timor, Myanmar and Rwanda. Records in the series pertain to trouble spots in the following countries and regions: Ethiopia, Libya, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Cambodia, Africa, Cyprus, Lebanon, South Africa, Western Sahara, Kashmir, East Timor and Afghanistan. A significant number of records pertain to the Iraq invasion of Kuwait in August of 1990, the International Tribunal for War Crimes in the former Yugoslavia and reports issued by the Human Rights Field Operation in Rwanda (HRFOR). Documented in the series are the efforts of the following United Nations missions and forces in trouble spots: United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM), Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), United Nations Advance Mission in Cambodia (UNAMIC) and United Nations Transition Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). Included in the series are files which document acts of terrorism such as missing persons and hostages, the Lockerbie air disaster (PANAM 103) and reports on investigations of terrorist organizations. Major conferences and summits documented in the series are the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (1992), World Conference on Human Rights (1993) and World Social Summit (1995).

Personnel files also contain records pertaining to current staff of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG) and current personnel in United Nations offices and departments; reappointment, promotion, status and retirement of personnel; assignment of personnel to missions and United Nations organs; evaluations of employee performance; documents concerning termination and extension of personnel contracts; records documenting complaints of employees; and letters of appreciation of service from the Secretary-General. Other personnel records pertain to the status of women in the United Nations Secretariat and to the profiles of D.2 personnel and Under-Secretaries-General. Records documenting the financial crisis of the United Nations pertain to the High Level Open-ended Working Group on the Financial Situation of the Organization and the debt of member states. Financial records also include documents proposing measures to improve the financial profile of the organization.

Included under general press matters files are documents related to press coverage of the United Nations; documents inviting the Secretary-General to write articles; documents regarding articles written by the Secretary-General; documents regarding requests of the Secretary-General for interviews and television appearances; documents regarding political cartoons; and documents pertaining to the office of the Spokesman for the Secretary-General. Files pertaining to interviews include transcripts of interviews given by the Secretary-General, and files pertaining to celebrations and concerts include documents related to United Nations Day, the 50th anniversary of the United Nations (1995) and Human Rights Day. Included in the series are speeches, messages and statements issued or given by the Secretary-General for the following types of events and occasions: conferences, summits, seminars, symposia, international days, conventions, dinners, anniversaries, and meetings with representatives of governments, universities and schools.
