These files are divided about equally between those of the Special Assistant to the Personal Representative of the Secretary-General, and general departmental (non-registry) files, 1947.

Files contain correspondence, memos, reports, working papers, minutes of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) and its sub-committees, press releases, clippings, accounts, maps, and photographs.

These concern UNSCOP's work in helping to resolve conflicting claims concerning the Holy Places, the partition of Palestine, and other matters that arose following the end of the British Mandate, as well as the administrative matters of UNSCOP.

Correspondents include the Arab Higher Committee; Jewish Agency for Palestine; the British government; various Arab governments; the government of Palestine; and many other Jewish and Arab individuals and political, religious, educational, and other organizations in the Middle East, America, and Europe. Of note are ca. 4 cubic ft. (3.3 linear ft.) of memoranda, and written statements and testimonies submitted to UNSCOP by governments and organizations; and a notebook containing Personal Representative of the Secretary- General Ralph Bunche's notes on meetings.

Also included are reference materials, in the form of books, pamphlets, and maps.

Documented are office operations including personnel administration, contract and purchasing, facilities management, travel arrangements and visits, humanitarian activity, political events, and the activities of peacekeeping and observer missions. Records are incoming and outgoing code and clear cables, as well as numbered and unnumbered cables. Correspondence is between top echelon United Nations officials in New York and missions located in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Dominican Republic, including Secretaries-General U Thant and Kurt Waldheim, Deputy Chef de Cabinet and later Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs Jose Rolz-Bennett, Under Secretary General for Special Political Affairs Ralph Bunche, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Philippe de Seynes, Controller Bruce Turner, Senior Officer for the Office of Special Political Affairs Brian Urquhart, Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs J. Series consists of numbered, unnumbered and only code cables (incoming and outgoing), clear cables, correspondence (correspondents include Richard Nixon), memoranda, United Nations documents, meeting minutes and verbatim reports, handwritten notes, drafts of correspondence and reports, speeches, maps, and photographs documenting Ralph Bunche's tenure at the United Nations. Of special note are personal papers of Ralph Bunche, which include publications; drafts; and handwritten notes on meetings and social events, childhood and family reminiscences, commentaries on racial incidents in the U.S. and notes exchanged with the Secretaries-General. Also included in the series are some original papers of Dag Hammarskjold. Bulk of the materials date from 1947-1971. Subjects include peace-keeping efforts in the Congo; Bahrain; India and Pakistan; Yemen; Cyprus; and the Middle East, including the Palestine Mediator's Mission (1948-1949), the Suez crisis, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), and the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF). Other subjects include the International Employees Loyalty Board hearing on Ralph Bunche (1954), the International Atomic Energy Agency and conferences on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, Secretary-General meetings, Vietnam, the Survey Group on Overseas Offices, travel, and personnel cases.
