Series consists of incoming and outgoing clear and code cables, correspondence, administration, reports, and press clippings relating to various missions sent to Cambodia and Thailand by the Security Council and the Secretary-General to resolve border and political disputes. Subjects include the special mission by Nils Gussing to Cambodia, the Security Council's special mission to Cambodia and Thailand, radio broadcasts about the border disputes, the Indochina People's Conference of 1965, and the Mekong Valley Development Project. Correspondents include Secretary-General U Thant, Chef de Cabinet C.V. Narasimhan, Special Officer J. F. Engers, and Special Envoy Nils Gussing. Arranged alphabetically by subject.

Series created and maintained until 1961 by Andrew Cordier, the Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General, and subsequently by Ralph Bunche, the Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs. Records are service records of individual military observers, generally following the end of their tenure with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) or other UN operations in the Middle East. Series conists of correspondence, incoming and outgoing clear cables, memoranda, and reports relating to the UN's food relief operations in East Pakistan before, during, and after the war between India and Pakistan, and is divided into four major subject categories as follows: a) administration, including communications, transportation, markings and insignia, and interaction with other UN agencies; b) staff, including files on senior and lower echelon staff members, as well as some substantive material on the various special representatives; c) evacuation of UNEPRO staff from Dacca, East Pakistan during India-Pakistan fighting of 1971; and d) reports, including progress updates. Series consists of incoming and outgoing clear cables, correspondence, reports, press releases and photographs relating to the six provinces of the Congo: Equateur, Katanga, Kasai, Kivu, Leopoldville, and Orientale. Katanga province makes up the bulk of the records which detail the conditions at Elisabethville Refugee Camp, general ONUC military operations, and incidents regarding the United Nations Peace-Keeping Troops.

Files include information on air missions; famine (Kasai); refugees (Kivu); military operations (Leopoldville); Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba (Orientale); and maps of all the provinces. Correspondents include Under-Secretary for Special Political Affairs Ralph Bunche, Officer-in-Charge R. K. Gardiner, and Officer-in-Charge B. F. Osorio-Tafall.

Series contains records pertaining to the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations, which was established on 26 June 1945 and phased out by the General Assembly decision of 11 January 1946 that the Executive Secretary of the commission would act as the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The commission was established to make provisional arrangements for the first sessions of the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the Trusteeship Council; to establish the Secretariat; to convene the International Court of Justice. The series consists of records collected by Brian Urquhart which pertain to the commission and some records created during the course of the commission's activities. The series also contains records pertaining to Gladwyn Jebb, who served as Executive Secretary of the Commission. Records consist of correspondence, reports, minutes and cables.

Series documents the activities of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), particularly in mediating the Kashmir problem. Also documented are the efforts of the office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (HICOMREF) in resolving the refugee crisis during the civil strife in East Pakistan (1971), which led to the creation of Bangladesh. Represented are the following United Nations missions: UNEPRO, UNROB, UNROD, and UNIPOM (United Nations East Pakistan Relief Operation, United Nations Relief Operation in Bangladesh, United Nations Relief Operation in Dacca, and United Nations India/Pakistan Observer Mission). Records relate to visits (1965) by Brian E. Urquhart as well as Secretary-General U Thant to the UNMOGIP area. Code cables, reports and other documentary evidence relate to the Kashmir mission (1965); other records relate to the Kashmir/Karachi Agreement.
