Administrative history: The Registry Section was established ca. 1954; the system was discontinued in 1979, after the decision to move to a decentralized records management system. Function was the centralization of Secretariat recordkeeping in one large classification system. Predecessor was Central Registry Section. Succeeded by decentralized recordkeeping by departments in consultation with the Archives Section's records management programme.

Series consists of the Registry Section's files relating to political and security matters as the TE series, which are specifically concerned with UNTSO only: the personnel records. Arranged numerically by file number, and therein chronologically.

Primary correspondents include Lieutenant-General Edson Burns, Ralph Bunche, Andrew Cordier, Dag Hammarskjold, Colonel Byron Leary, Lieutenant-General Odd Bull and Major-General Carl von Horn.

Series was created, in large part, by Andrew Cordier, who served as Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General 1946-1961. Subsequently a couple of files were added by Ralph Bunche in his capacity as Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs (1958-1972). Records include correspondence, incoming and outgoing code cables, incoming and outgoing clear cables, administrative files, reports, photographs, and maps related to the activities of the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East. Documented are administrative matters, incidents, political matters, the status of UNTSO within the area, activities of the Mixed Armistice Commissions (MAC's), the establishment of Government House, truce negotiations, and regional conflicts in 1948, 1956, and 1967. Correspondents include Acting UN Mediator for Palestine Ralph J. Bunche, Assistant to the Executive Assistant Leo Malania, and UNTSO Chiefs of Staff William Riley, Vagn Bennike, E.L.M. Burns, and Carl C. von Horn. Arranged in approximate alphabetical sequence.

Series consists of clear cables, military staff lists, situation reports, SOPs, lists of military officers (South Lebanon), correspondence of the Secretary General, requests for purchases, service efficiency reports, incident reports and country files documenting the progress of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). Subjects include the Bedouin buffer zone; the Egyptian surveillance station; incidents in South Lebanon; scheduled flights; the armistice demarcation line; ILMAC (Israel-Lebanese Mixed Armistice Commission; the Suez sector; Operation Mike (OPMIKE); Operation Charlie (OPCHARLIE); and the papal visit of 1963. Correspondence includes exchanges between Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim and then president of the Security Council Mansur Rashid Kikhin. Other correspondents include Military Liason Officer L. Koho; Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs R. J. Bunche; and UNTSO Chief of Staff O. Bull.
Subjects of photographs found in this series include Egyptian prisoners and guards, shell damage and ruined UN vehicles.

"This series has been renumbered to (S-1848). The original series (S-0601) contain paper records and microfilm originals. As of July 2005 boxes 12, 27, 28, 29 and 30 are not on the shelves, i.e., they have probably been moved, or are missing. Microfilm originals are in boxes 10 and 11 (and according to Karyono Sugiarto, box 12 also contained original microfilm reels). No further description is available for the records in these boxes. The contents of the microfilm (which correspond to originals held in secure off-site storage) are described in a published inventory and a later more complete inventory (which includes corresponding microfilm numbers). Both FF and LIC Reading Rooms have 2 copies of the detailed finding aid. Access conditions: By application to the Secretary-General. Access decision by the Office of Legal Affairs. Permission is communicated by the Assistant Secretary-General to whom the Archives and Records Management Section reports."

Files in the series which pertain to the Office of the Deputy Secretary-General consist of reports to the Deputy Secretary-General about United Nations activities, correspondence between the Deputy Secretary-General and senior officials, press material covering the Deputy Secretary-General's activities, text of messages and statements issued by the Deputy Secretary-General, and records documenting communication between the Deputy Secretary-General and the Secretary-General. Also contained in the series are files which pertain to the activities of Under Secretary-General Maurice F. Strong and which regard the Secretary-General's programme for reform and developments in the Korean peninsula. Series also contains agendas and notes of meetings of the Policy Committee of the Strategic Planning Unit (SPU).
