Correspondence - Outside Organizations and Individuals

Series consists of correspondence with high profile individuals, public figures and outside organizations, as well as "Protests, petitions, comments" from the general public worldwide. Records include holiday and birthday greetings, thank you notes, condolences, speaking invitations, and invitations to various events. Arranged in two alphabetical sequences followed by miscellaneous files, and finally, the "Protests" etc.

Special Programmes

Series documents the Secretary-General's involvement in a variety of programs and issues, including Apartheid, disasters, narcotic drugs, environment, food programs, hijackings, terrorism, among others. Records include correspondence, memoranda, official documents, etc. Arranged in a general alphabetical file title sequence.

Principal Organs - General Assembly

Series contains the General Assembly session files (the 26th Session to the 36th Session, as well as the 6th Special Session to the 11th Special Session). Records are primarily UN documents, with additional subfiles containing correspondence, handwritten notes, press releases, and so forth. Appended is a set of files on the 'Permanent Representatives of United Nations Member States'. Arranged in the following broad categories (and therein chronologically, numbered by meeting): General Assembly Sessions (regular and special), then a set of 'exxcerpts from verbatim records', and finally the chronological set of files concerning 'Permanent Representatives of United Nations Member States'.

Peacekeeping - Middle East

Series comprises the documented record of the Secretary-General's involvement in peacekeeping and diplomacy in the region of Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, the Palestinians, and Syria, including the periods of military conflicts and peacemaking successes, during the SG's tenure, 1972-1981. Represented are the following United Nations missions: UNEF II, UNDOF, and UNIFIL (United Nations Emergency Force, United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, and United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon). Records include correspondence, clear and code cables, the Secretary-General's handwritten notes, interview transcripts, maps, press clippings, photographs, etc. Correspondents include heads-of-states of the region and from outside it. Arranged in the following broad categories: personal files, peacekeeping operations and other missions, country files (first the countries of the region, then other countries), Palestinian matters, the peace conferences and treaties, and a variety of miscellaneous topics (e.g. 'incidents').

Peacekeeping - Africa

Series consists in large part of United Nations official documents pertaining to the Question of Namibia, including the evolving independence of Namibia, but also includes cables, handwritten notes, letters, speeches, etc., which comprise the documented record of the Secretary-General's involvement in the issues of Namibia, South Africa, the Portuguese territories (including the Angolan conflict), and Southern Rhodesia (UN documents only). Correspondents include South African government officials. Arranged in the following broad categories: Question of Namibia, Portuguese territories, and Southern Rhodesia.

Emergency and Relief Operations

Series documents interactions of the Secretary-General's office with various UN emergency and relief operations (including refugee work in South-East Asia), development programmes, United Nations Associations, environmental programmes, the United Nations University, UNICEF (including International Year of the Child), as well as population, human rights, trade and disarmament activities.

Trips

Series consists of information pertaining to the Secretary-General's travel arrangements while on official United Nations business. Records include correspondence and detailed itineraries. Arranged chronologically.

Administrative Files

Series documents the administrative aspects of the Secretary-General's responsibilities. The administrative filing system was arranged into the following broad functional areas: organization, general administration (SG's annual reports, departments, UNOG, meetings, public relations, etc.), buildings, finance and budget, and personnel (staff associations, Soviet and Chinese staff case files, top echelon posts, etc.). Correspondents are primarily senior staff and some member state representatives. Arranged in functional categories; please note that the last boxes of the series had been separated from the filing system so appear out of sequence.
