Administrative history: The United Nations Commission for the Unification and Rehabilitation of Korea (UNCURK) was established in 1950 to bring about an independent democratic government for all of Korea; it was dissolved in 1974. United Nations troops participated in the Korean War from 1950 to 1954. The UNMCK had been managed by UNCURK until UNCURK was dissolved in 1974. In February 1974 UNCURK transferred the management of the UNMCK to the Commission for the UNMCK consisting of 11 member nations.
Archival history: Korean cemetery records of UNCURK became part of the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) files when UNMCK began managing the cemetery in March 1960.

Scope and content: Series consists of burial records pertaining to the following cemeteries: P.O.W. Cemetery No. 1 (including grave cards representing approximately 1,500 individuals); P.O.W. Cemetery No. 2 (including grave cards representing approximately 7,000 individuals); Cheju-Do Cemetery (partial representation); Koje-Do Cemetery (partial representation); and Masan P.O.W. Cemetery (tiny representation). There are missing grave cards for all cemeteries. For the larger cemeteries there are plot charts. Also included is correspondence of Medical Officer Robert W. Briggs. Arranged by cemetery and therein by grave number.

Existence and location of copies: Researchers use microfilm copies (Set 1, 25 reels, master negative, located at LIC facility; Set 2, 25 reels, service copy, located at LIC facility; Set 3, 25 reels, service copy, located at FF facility, Microfilm Cabinet 3, drawer 8); Set 4, 25 reels, duplicate negative, located at FF facility, Microfilm Cabinet 3, drawer 8). For internal use only the archives has 4 CD-ROMs (tiff), 5 CD-ROMs (gif), and 5 CD-ROMs (pdf), shelved at FF123 R020 SU08 (1 box). Microfilm and CD-ROM copies produced by Hudson Microimaging in May 2004.

Also included are espionage case files, 1968-1971; reports on elections, 1954-1971, and various committee minutes, agendas, and rules of procedure; press releases; reports, and radio and television interviews.

Files of the Research Department, 1953-1973, contain reports, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly summaries of developments; press releases; minutes; working papers; and United Nations and UNCURK resolutions. Registry files, 1956-1974, contain correspondence, cables, reports, staff lists, accounts, and other documents relating to the administration of UNCURK.
