Series 1092 contains records that consist of code cables, correspondence, reports of meetings, notes, memoranda, proposals, press releases and minutes of meetings. The records were generated by the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG) and document the relations between EOSG and the following departments and offices of the United Nations Secretariat: Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), Office of Legal Affairs (OLA), Department of Political Affairs (DPA), Department for Disarmament Affairs (DDA), Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Department of Management (DM), Department of Public Information (DPI), Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM), and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Documents in this series pertain to matters which have come to the Secretary-General for action or which are the products of the Secretary-General's work or authority. Files for the Department of Political Affairs (DPA) include reports on activities and proceedings of the Security Council and records documenting informal consultations between members of delegations and the Security Council. Files for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) include records pertaining to the Office of the Emergency Relief Coordinator (OERC), Office of the Iraq Programme (OIP), Office of the Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq (UNOHCI), the United Nations Independent Inquiry Committee (IIC), as well as to earthquake, flood and tsunami relief and the International Strategy for Natural Disaster Reduction.

A key set of records consists of code cables sent to Kofi Annan from Under-Secretaries-General, Assistant Secretaries-General, Special Representatives, Special Coordinators and Special Advisers of the Secretary-General. The cables contain information about responses to crises in Timor-Leste, Kosovo, the Horn of Africa, and Lebanon where special commissions were created, special envoys were deployed and interim forces were sent. In addition, they include discussion of structural reform and added positions such as two deputy-secretary generals. The code cables also contain correspondence with the Security Council on such topics as the draft resolution of Sierra Leone and the draft peace agreement for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Note that the series contains closed files for the following departments and offices: Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA), Department of Administration and Management (DAM), the Office of Programme Planning, Budget and Finance (OPPBF) and the Department of Humanitarian Affairs (DHA). Series contains files for the Department of General Assembly Affairs and Conference Services (DGAACS) for the years 1997-2002.

Press matters and public relations

Series contains documents pertaining to United Nations press matters and public relations.
General press matters files consist of documents related to press coverage of the United Nations and the Secretary-General; documents inviting the Secretary-General to write articles or contribute messages and statements; documents regarding articles written by the Secretary-General; documents regarding requests of the Secretary-General for interviews and television appearances; documents regarding political cartoons; and documents pertaining to the Office of the Spokesman for the Secretary-General.

Files in the series which pertain to United Nations Day (24 October), Human Rights Day, the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1998) and the 60th anniversary of the United Nations (2005) include documents regarding preparations for celebratory events, text of statements made and congratulatory letters and statements sent to the United Nations by member states, organizations and the general public.
Also contained in the series are records pertaining to donations of money made to the United Nations and to books, photographs and other items received as gifts by the Secretary-General and his wife Mrs. Nane Annan. Records consist of press releases, press clippings, daily press briefings, correspondence, cards, notes and faxes.

Secretary-General Personal

Series contains records pertaining to the Secretary-General that are personal in nature or that are related to matters of importance in the Secretary-General's non-professional obligations. Included in the series is correspondence with VIPs, personal friends of the Secretary-General and persons who made his acquaintance on official trips and at official public events. VIP correspondence includes invitations extended to the Secretary-General to attend cultural events; documents activities the Secretary-General became involved with or considered which fell outside his obligations as Secretary-General; and contains letters in which people express their views of the United Nations and of global issues. VIP correspondence also includes letters exchanged between the Secretary-General and the Aga Khan family, Brian Urquhart and former Secretaries-General Kurt Waldheim, Javier Perez de Cuellar and Boutros Boutros-Ghali. Series also includes official letters of condolence sent by the Secretary-General to relatives and friends of persons within the United Nations system recently deceased; letters sent to ambassadors of member states on the occasion of the death of persons serving with United Nations missions and field operations; and letters of condolence sent to heads of state after the occurrence of a natural disaster. Included in the series are files containing congratulatory messages and well wishes from colleagues, governments and the general public to the Secretary-General upon his election and re-election to the post; upon the Secretary-General's mission to Iraq in 1998, which resulted in the Memorandum of Understanding between the United Nations and Iraq signed 23 February 1998; and upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. Also documented are honors and titles offered to the Secretary-General by universities and other institutions and organizations. Records in the series consist of correspondence, notes, greeting cards, faxes, press releases and invitations.
