Records in this series relate to United Nations diplomacy in Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Subject files document diplomatic relations between Soviet Union and Afghanistan from 1980-1984, the Secretary-General's visits to Pakistan and Afghanistan (1981), the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1981 and diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran. Files also pertain to the Iran/Iraq war, the early regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Security Council meetings and resolutions pertaining to the Iran/Iraq war, the situation in the Persian Gulf and the use of chemical weapons.
