Series consists of letters, clear and code cables, maps of Rwanda-Burundi, photographs, newspaper clippings, memoranda, press releases and reports relating to UN missions and commissions in Africa. The bulk of records (1.5 linear feet) pertain to the UN trust territory of Rwanda-Burundi, and include background information, administrative issues, internal security and border problems. The rest of the documents relate to the assistance programs, border incidents and refugees in other areas of Africa, such as Cameroons, Togo, Somalia, Ethiopia, Mogadiscio, Libya, Angola, Rhodesia, Mozambique, Guinea, Ivory Coast and Congo. Series consists of correspondence, reports, and meeting summary records of the Conciliation Commission for the Congo.

The records detail the Conciliation Commission's main responsibilities which consisted of the study of the situation in the Congo and the promotion of conciliation between opposing political groups in the Republic. Minutes discuss the processes involved in strengthening the unity, territorial integrity, and political independence of the Congo within the consititutional and legal framework of the Republic. The Commission's members included representatives from Ethiopia, Liberia, Morrocco, Pakistan, Senegal, Sudan, and Tunisia and Jaja A. Wachuku of Nigeria as President.

These files originated from the offices of Special Assistant for Congo Civilian Operations Gustavo Duran and Special Advisor for Civilian Affairs in the Congo Sir Alexander MacFarquhar. Records include reports on the role of UNESCO, assistance to provinces, problems of unemployed youth in Leopoldville, and progress reports on agriculture, communications, education, finance, foreign trade, health, labor, magistrature, military, natural resources, and public administration. Also included are mission reports on the investigation into the effects of the overflow of Lake Tanganyika in the City of Albertville and regarding the damage and repair of bridges in Katanga. Reports by experts include investigations of fiscal offices and the treasury, studies of water transportation, summary of the refugee situation in the Congo, the housing situation, developments of the Central Bank, and information on the labor market. This series also includes reports of the Secretary-General on the implementation of Resolution 1746 (XVI) 1962.
