Hashemite Jordan Kingdom-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission (HJK-I-MAC)

Executive Assistant to SG (1946-1961: Cordier)

Series contains cables, correspondence, reports, photographs, and maps related to activities of Hashemite Jordan Kingdom-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission (HJK-I-MAC). Commission set up to resolve minor incidents between Jordan and Israel over border crossings, overflights by aircraft, illegal cultivation, etc. Much of the correspondence is between UNTSO (responsible for control of the various MAC's) and UN headquarters, but some is also between Jordan or Israel and UNTSO or UN headquarters. Also contains investigation files undertaken by UN military observers (UNMO) which include photographs and written reports of the incidents. Series also contains files on Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem, which was under the authority of the HJK-I-MAC chairman.

Under-Secretary General for UNROD/UNROB (1972-1974:Jackson)

Series consists of personal workfiles of Sir Robert Jackson, reports by various UN and diplomatic officials, notes, minutes of meetings, plans and requirements for assistance and aid to Bangladesh and Pakistan, progress reports, press releases, newspaper clippings, photographs, invoices, letters, clear and code cables. Documented are flood relief and reconstruction in Pakistan, repatriation and resettlement of refugees in Pakistan and Bangladesh, development of agriculture and transportation, food shipments, and Chalna Port Shipwreck clearance. Documents created prior to 1972 relate to prior activities in the area and were accumulated as background information. Records created after 1974 contain correspondence related to residual funds from UNROB, staff and policy issues, reports on the continuation of food shipments. Correspondents include Senior Industrial Development Officer Nicky Berendjick, Chef-de Cabinet Chakravarthi Narasimhan, and Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim.

Series consists of reports and studies, memoranda, press releases and correspondence related to UN assistance to Indo-China, newspaper clippings and publications on Viet-Nam, Laos and Cambodia, government documents. Series contains material created prior to 1975 and accumulated as background information. Documented are UN relief and rehabilitation activities after the wars in the area have ended, such as relations with donor governments, resettlement of refugees, food provisions and assistance programs, personnel and policy issues. Series contains papers relating to Mekong River Development Project, including reference material, reports and publications on Lower Mekong Rivert Project, and correspondence, working papers, interim and final reports on Pa Mong Dam project. Commission set up to resolve minor incidents between Lebanon and Israel over border crossings, overflights by aircraft, illegal cultivation, etc. Series contains some investigation files.

Series consists of incoming and outgoing clear and code cables and press cables. Subjects include administration of the UN mission to Laos, peace negotiations between Laos and Vietnam over border incidents, economic and technical aid to Laos, and the Laotian political situation. Other subjects include the Economic Commission on Asia. Correspondents include Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General Andrew Cordier and Special Officer J.F. Engers.

Series consists of incoming and outgoing code and clear cables, correspondence, memoranda, transcripts, and committee papers. Subjects include the Security Council Subcommittee Mission, created in response to Laotian complaints of Vietnamese incursions. Also included is correspondence to the UN mission to Laos involving administrative issues such as personnel shifts, financial matters, investigations of complaints and interviews of witnesses, protocol and technical assistance, and radio broadcasts. Correspondents include Secretaries-General U Thant and Dag Hammarskjold, Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General Andrew Cordier, Special Officer J.F. Engers, and Special Envoy Sakari Tuomioja.

Series created by various Under-Secretaries-Generals for Special Political Affairs, including at the end of the period, Under-Secretary-General Cordovez. Records include United Nations official documents, numbered code and clear cables (incoming and outgoing), press releases, daily press briefings, correspondence, memoranda, and press clippings regarding the Middle East, including Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and the Palestine LIberation Organization (PLO). Includes meeting summaries, briefing notes for the Secretary-General, agreements, and some maps. Bulk of materials date from 1967 to 1986; only two items date from 1948-1949. Subjects include the question of Palestine; the Arab-Israeli conflict; deportations from Israeli-occupied territories; assistance for the reconstruction and development of Lebanon; and the construction of a Mediterranean-Dead Sea canal. Includes reports of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Population of the Occupied Territories; briefing notes to the Secretary-General; and summaries of meetings with Permanent Representatives to the United Nations.
