Missions of the Special Representatives of the Secretary-General in Cambodia and Thailand

Series consists of letters, numbered and unnumbered code cables, clear cables, a situation report by Ambassador Herbert de Ribbing, notes on conversations, and press releases regarding hostilities between Cambodia and Thailand which led to the Secretary-General's decision to send mediators to the area.

This series relates to two missions, one headed by Nils Gussing, Special Representative to the Secretary-General from 1963 to 1964 and the other headed by Ambassdor Herebet de Ribbing, Special Representative to the Secretary-General from 1966 to 1967.

Documented are the mission's itineraries, staff matters, meetings and updates. Correspondents include Chef-de-Cabinet C. V. Narasimhan, Secretaty-General U Thant, Representives of the Permanent Mission of Thailand, Herbert de Ribbing and Nils Gussing.

Afghanistan - Iran - Iraq

Records in this series relate to United Nations diplomacy in Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Subject files document diplomatic relations between Soviet Union and Afghanistan from 1980-1984, the Secretary-General's visits to Pakistan and Afghanistan (1981), the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1981 and diplomatic relations between the United States and Iran. Files also pertain to the Iran/Iraq war, the early regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Security Council meetings and resolutions pertaining to the Iran/Iraq war, the situation in the Persian Gulf and the use of chemical weapons. Africa (except Congo)

Series documents the interactions of Brian E. Urquhart and other senior UN officials with leaders of African countries excepting Congo. Also documented is UN involvement in peacekeeping in the Western Sahara region (1980-1984), humanitarian efforts in Nigeria and Biafra (1968-1970), and the refugee crisis in Rwanda and Burundi (1963-1966). Arranged alphabetically by country or region in the following order: Africa (general information), Biafra, Burundi, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Nigeria, Rwanda/Burundi, Somalia/Horn of Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zaire and Zambia. Organisation des Nations Unies au Congo (ONUC)

Series documents the mediation and peacekeeping efforts of Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold, Brian E. Urquhart and other senior UN officials such as Dr. Ralph Bunche during the Katanga secessionist movement in the Republic of the Congo (1960-1964). Represented are the following United Nations task forces: Organization de Nations Unies Du Congo (ONUC), UN Advisory Committee on the Congo and the UN Conciliation Commission for the Congo. The series is arranged in three broad categories: cables (incoming and outgoing code cables), subject files, and the records of the United Nations Conciliation Commission of the Congo. The series includes minutes of meetings, correspondence, press releases, speeches, and photographs. Correspondents include SG Hammarskjold, Haile Selassie (Emperor of Ethiopia), Joseph Kasa-Vubu (President of the Republic of Congo), Cyrille Adoula (Prime Minister of the Republic of Congo), Moise Tshombe (President of the secessionist African state of Katanga) and Kwame Nkrumah (President of Ghana). Series consists of draft and final reports on the political and military situation between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, including those of the Secretary-General's Special Representative and the Secretary-General's to the Security Council. Subjects include press coverage in Ankara, Turkey, weekly information from the headquarters of the UN Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP), cease-fire violations, and UN Civilian Police (UNCIVPOL) activities.
