Southeast Asia - Kampuchea - Indochina/Vietnam

Series documents United Nations peacekeeping and relief efforts in Southeast Asia, particularly regarding Kampuchea and Vietnam. Documented is UN involvement in the resolution of the refugee problem in Kampuchea resulting from armed conflict between Vietnam and China (1979-1984). Also documented are mediation efforts during the Paris Peace Talks regarding the end of war between Vietnam and the United States. Included is material related to Secretary-General Waldheim's Kampuchea meetings with leaders and representatives of Southeast Asian nations. Records include agreements, correspondence, press releases, etc. Correspondents include Sir Robert Jackson (Coordinator of Relief Assistance in Kampuchea), Dr. Victor Umbricht, M. Raymond Aubrac, Under-Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim.

Secretaries-General

Series contains Brian E. Urquhart's files pertaining to several Secretaries-General: Dag Hammarskjold, U Thant, Kurt Waldheim, and Javier Perez de Cuellar. Records include correspondence, photographs, interviews, press clippings, speeches, statements, press releases, transcripts and summaries of press conferences, and background material and introductions related to Annual Reports (1972-1985). Documented are speeches and other material written by Mr. Urquhart for the Secretaries-General. Records also pertain to Dag Hammarskjold's death in a plane crash as well as memorial services held in his honor. Series is arranged by name of Secretary-General.

Personal files

Series consists of the personal office files of Brian Urquhart. Many files contain correspondence with public figures, including senior United Nations and government officials and personal friends. Correspondence includes invitations to speak at universities and private organizations, requests for employment, holiday greetings and congratulatory notes and letters related to Mr. Urquhart's promotion to Under-Secretary-General. Also included are records documenting the negative press about the United Nations generated by United States journalists and private think tanks. Included in the series are lists of speaking engagements and copies of speeches and lectures that Mr. Urquhart presented to national and international institutions and organizations such as the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, the International Peace Academy and Princeton University, and the full texts of and documents related to Brian Urquhart's published writing from 1949 to 1985. These writing files include the background papers and manuscript of Brian Urquhart's book "Hammarskjold" (1972) and his autobiography "A Life in Peace and War" (1987), newspaper and journal articles, editorials, obituaries and statements. Also documenting his role as a public figure are interviews with leading news organizations such as the British Broadcasting Corporation and The New York Times. The series also includes bound volumes of United Nations periodicals; books and other printed material collected by Brian Urquhart; photographs of Brian Urquhart; video cassettes; and audio recordings. Additionally, files related to Ralph J. Bunche, containing biographical data, photographs and writing of Ralph J. Bunche are included in the series. Subject files concern Ralph J. Bunche's retirement from the United Nations; the Ralph J. Bunche memorial at the Rogosin Kidney Center in New York; the Daniel Larue Johnson sculpture dedicated to Ralph J. Bunche, "Peace Form One"; the Dag Hammarskjold Memorial "Single Form", created by sculptress Barbara Hepworth; and the deposit of the Ralph J. Bunche papers.

R.E. Guyer

Series contains records of Roberto E. Guyer dating mainly from his years as Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs. Subject files concern Chile, Cyprus, Beirut, Lebanon, the Middle East, Rhodesia and Vietnam. Files pertaining to Margaret Joan Anstee (United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative in Chile) and the Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA) are included. Series also contains code cables relating to the United Nations Chief Co-ordinator, the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF), the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Also included are registry files coded in a general (GEN) or political (POL) series; these files pertain to the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, human rights, the Office of Legal Affairs, hijacking, kidnapping, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the People's Republic of China's entry into the United Nations. Records consist of correspondence, reports, statements, notes and code cables. The first ten files of the series, which contain memoranda from Sir Robert Jackson and miscellaneous code cables, are missing.

Gunnar Jarring, Special Representative of the SG in the Middle East

Series consists of records pertaining to Gunnar Jarring's service as Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Middle East. Records document discussions and negotiations related to the Jarring Mission. Series also includes working files belonging to Ian Berensen. Subject files pertain to the United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine, the Organization of African Unity, and to Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, United Arab Republic and Lebanon. Records include correspondence, code cables, minutes, reports, drafts, communiqués and background papers.

United Nations Malaysia Mission (UNMAM)

Series consists of UNMAM's final report to the Secretary-General (including related annexes and the Secretary-General's final conclusions) (copy), and the Manila Accord, Declaration and Joint Statements drafted by the heads of governments of Indonesia, the Philippines and the Federation of Malaya (copies) relating to the improvement of relations amongst their countries. Also included are clear cables, numbered code cables, memoranda, letters, press releases, and United Nations documents relating to the establishment of the Federation of Malaysia; UNMAM personnel, task instructions, and mission progress; and alleged military incidents between the Federation of Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Correspondents include Jose Rolz-Bennett, Secretary-General U Thant, representatives of Britain, Indonesia, the Philippines, and UNMAM. Arranged alphabetically by subject.

Records relating to the Fact-Finding Mission to South Vietnam

Series consists of letters, numbered code cables, clear cables, United Nations documents, and the mission's final report relating to the Fact-Finding Mission to South Vietnam's task instructions, finances and situation updates. Correspondents include Chef-de-Cabinet C. V. Narasimhan, Rolz-Bennett, the Mission Chairman Abdul Rahman Pazkwak and the Mission Principal Secretary John Humphrey.
