UN. Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General (1946-1961: Cordier) Office for Special Political Affairs (1958-1972: Bunche)

Series consists of incoming and outgoing clear cables, correspondence, reports, press releases and photographs relating to the six provinces of the Congo: Equateur, Katanga, Kasai, Kivu, Leopoldville, and Orientale. Katanga province makes up the bulk of the records which detail the conditions at Elisabethville Refugee Camp, general ONUC military operations, and incidents regarding the United Nations Peace-Keeping Troops.

Files include information on air missions; famine (Kasai); refugees (Kivu); military operations (Leopoldville); Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba (Orientale); and maps of all the provinces. Correspondents include Under-Secretary for Special Political Affairs Ralph Bunche, Officer-in-Charge R. K. Gardiner, and Officer-in-Charge B. F. Osorio-Tafall.

UN. Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General (1946-1961: Cordier) Office for Special Political Affairs (1958-1972: Bunche)

Series consists of correspondence, press releases, and incoming and outgoing clear cables regarding the cooperation of various foreign governments with the United Nations efforts in the Congo. This support involved both military and civilian operations and included both the reinforcement of United Nations troops and airlifts of relief supplies. The files also contain information on investigations into missing aircraft (Italy); the need for English and French speaking officers (Ireland); information regarding the Nigeria/Mali airlift; issues surrounding the transfer of military forces to civilian status (Pakistan); the Congo's embargo on exports from South Katanga (Portugal); expulsion of Sudanese refugees from the Stanleyville area; and expulsion of the Soviet embassy staff (U.S.S.R.). This series also includes files on the cities of Gaza and Jerusalem. Correspondents include Under Secretary for Special Political Affairs Ralph Bunche, Executive Assistant Andrew Cordier, and General Sean Maceoin.

Series maintained by the Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General, Andrew Cordier, until 1961, then by the Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs, Ralph Bunche, who also served as Acting Mediator for Palestine. Records consist of weekly summary reports from the Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) related to events under his command. Correspondents include Secretaries-General Trygve Lie, Dag Hammarskjold, and U Thant, as well as UNTSO Chiefs-of-Staff William Riley, Vagn Bennike, E.L.M. Burns, Carl C. von Horn, and Odd Bull. Arranged chronologically.

Series consists of correspondence, incoming and outgoing clear and code cables, press releases, photographs, newspaper articles, publications, and reports. These records originated primarily in the Offices of Special Assistant for Congo Civilian Operations Gustavo Duran and Special Advisor for Civilian Affairs in the Congo Sir Alexander MacFarquhar. Incorporated with these files are records from Political Affairs Officer Fou Tchin Liu, Principal Secretary of the Conciliation Commission for the Congo Dragoslav Protitch, Under-Secretary in Charge of Civilian Affairs in the Congo Godfrey Amachree and Special Assistant for Burundi and Rwanda Affairs Jan G. Schumacher. Files include information on the financial and administrative status of the Congo Fund; documentation on the Office of Public Information; information on agricultural training, communication and transportation projects; Conciliation Commission minutes; statistical information relating to the economy; documentation regarding education; records on the implementation of the Security Council Resolution (1961); police training records; government information bulletins and details on the technical assistance program in Rwanda-Burundi; data on food production; and correspondence regarding specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization and the International Telecommunications Union.

Series contains records of Roberto E. Guyer dating mainly from his years as Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs. Subject files concern Chile, Cyprus, Beirut, Lebanon, the Middle East, Rhodesia and Vietnam. Files pertaining to Margaret Joan Anstee (United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative in Chile) and the Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA) are included.
