Political - Trouble Areas and Terrorism

S-1043 contains correspondence, communications, reports and code cables pertaining to areas undergoing political conflict and/or critical situations relating to economic and social problems. Series is arranged alphabetically by country or region and includes files pertaining to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), the Council for Namibia, the Office for Emergency Operations in Africa, the case of Nicaragua vs. United States of America, and the Group of Experts on the Consequences of the Israeli Armed Attack against the Iraqi Nuclear Installations.

S-1032 documents Secretary-General's correspondence with heads of state, diplomats, VIP's and friends including thank-you letters for 70th birthday, election/re-election wishes, and congratulations on Iran/Iraq cease fire. Also includes get well wishes following Secretary-General's hospitalization in 1986. Includes intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and UN associations. See also S-1031.

S-1024 documents the Secretary-General's contacts and information gathering relating to the member nations of the United Nations. Records include correspondence with heads of states, foreign ministers and representatives, as well as code cables, handwritten notes, speeches, UN documents, news clippings, photographs, etc. Arranged in alphabetical sequences by country.

Celebrations, Concerts and Public Events

S-1026 consists of records documenting United Nations Day, Human Rights Day, the 40th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 40th Anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. Records include correspondence, invitations, congratulatory letters, press materials covering the events and documents related the planning and follow-up of the events.

Political - Human Rights

S-1055 contains records pertaining to human rights and includes subject files concerning the United Nations Commission on Human Rights; the Centre for Human Rights; the Human Rights Committee; and the Independent Commission on International Humanitarian Issues. Series also contains records concerning human rights in Poland, Iran and Iraq, and records concerning apartheid. Records consist of correspondence, reports, notes and official documents.

Correspondence - Heads-of-State, Governments, and Representatives/Observers

S-1056 documents the Secretary-General's interactions with heads-of-state, governments and some representatives and observers to the United Nations. Records include correspondence, notes and reports. Series includes files pertaining to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), the Republic of Korea and the Holy See. See also S-1031.

Trips

S-1022 documents the travel of the Secretary-General. Records include correspondence, itineraries and briefing books. Logs of countries visited by the Secretary-General during his tenure and records pertaining to socials hosted by the Secretary-General for the year 1991 are included in the Kofi Annan fond.

Personal

S-1031 contains invitations, congratulatory messages, thank you letters and holiday greetings sent to Secretary-General and Mrs. Perez de Cuellar during his two terms as Secretary-General of the United Nations, 1982-1991. The invitations are organized chronologically and are grouped according to invitations accepted, invitations regretted, and invitations having no action taken. Series also contains the Secretary-General's correspondence with universities, colleges, schools, miscellaneous organizations, VIPs and friends. See also S-1032.

A large number of files pertain to personnel, candidates for employment positions, competitive examinations and the retirement of personnel, with numerous files concerning individual United Nations personnel.
