Series consists of the papers retained by Ralph J. Bunche throughout his employment with the UN. Subjects include the 1949 Israel-TransJordan General Armistice Agreement (annexes contain maps); the 1949 Israel-Syrian General Armistice Agreement; the Convention d'Armistice; the 1949 Israel-Lebanese General Armistice agreement (with map); armistice negotiations; and congratulatory messages conferred upon Bunche for his receipt of various awards and honors. Files contain the original armistice agreements with signatures.

Series consists of numbered, unnumbered and only code cables (incoming and outgoing), clear cables, correspondence (correspondents include Richard Nixon), memoranda, United Nations documents, meeting minutes and verbatim reports, handwritten notes, drafts of correspondence and reports, speeches, maps, and photographs documenting Ralph Bunche's tenure at the United Nations. Of special note are personal papers of Ralph Bunche, which include publications; drafts; and handwritten notes on meetings and social events, childhood and family reminiscences, commentaries on racial incidents in the U.S. and notes exchanged with the Secretaries-General. Also included in the series are some original papers of Dag Hammarskjold. Bulk of the materials date from 1947-1971. Subjects include peace-keeping efforts in the Congo; Bahrain; India and Pakistan; Yemen; Cyprus; and the Middle East, including the Palestine Mediator's Mission (1948-1949), the Suez crisis, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), and the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF). Other subjects include the International Employees Loyalty Board hearing on Ralph Bunche (1954), the International Atomic Energy Agency and conferences on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, Secretary-General meetings, Vietnam, the Survey Group on Overseas Offices, travel, and personnel cases. Series contains records pertaining to the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations, which was established on 26 June 1945 and phased out by the General Assembly decision of 11 January 1946 that the Executive Secretary of the commission would act as the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The commission was established to make provisional arrangements for the first sessions of the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the Trusteeship Council; to establish the Secretariat; to convene the International Court of Justice. The series consists of records collected by Brian Urquhart which pertain to the commission and some records created during the course of the commission's activities. The series also contains records pertaining to Gladwyn Jebb, who served as Executive Secretary of the Commission. Records consist of correspondence, reports, minutes and cables.

Series documents United Nations conferences that relate to non-aggressive uses of scientific knowledge and atomic energy. The majority of files pertain to the organization and carrying out of the First United Nations International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy (1955), the Second United Nations International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy (1958), and the Third United Nations International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy (1964). ICPUAE documents include correspondence, reports, programs, handbooks, verbatim records of sessions, bound volumes of conference proceedings and press briefings. Also included are records pertaining to the final Conference on the Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency (1956), as well as records pertaining to the IAEA's establishment as an independent organization. A few subject files of the Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation are included. Correspondence, working papers and reports of the United Nations Scientific Advisory Committee and of the Conference on the Application of Science and Technology (1961) are also included (documents of the latter include photographs). The series also contains records of the Administrative Committee on Co-ordination, the Collective Measures Committee and the Additional Measures Committee.

Series consists of records relating to United Nations peacekeeping operations, stand-by forces and military observers. Includes a number of files dating from 1947 to 1971 that pertain to the establishment of United Nations peacekeeping missions. Miscellaneous files pertaining to peacekeeping include correspondence, reports, official government statements, some photographs and documents regarding proposals for a permanent United Nations peacekeeping force. Also included in the series are files that pertain to the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, the United Nations Observation Group in Lebanon (UNOGIL) and the United Nations Yemen Observer Mission (UNYOM). Some records of James Jonah and Lt. General Prem Chand are also included, as well as files containing published material related to peacekeeping by Brigadier F. R. Henn and Colonel L. M. K. Skern.

Represented are the following United Nations task forces: Organization de Nations Unies Du Congo (ONUC), UN Advisory Committee on the Congo and the UN Conciliation Commission for the Congo. The series is arranged in three broad categories: cables (incoming and outgoing code cables), subject files, and the records of the United Nations Conciliation Commission of the Congo.
