Hashemite Jordan Kingdom-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission (HJK-I-MAC)

Series contains cables, correspondence, reports, photographs, and maps related to activities of Hashemite Jordan Kingdom-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission (HJK-I-MAC). Commission set up to resolve minor incidents between Jordan and Israel over border crossings, overflights by aircraft, illegal cultivation, etc. Much of the correspondence is between UNTSO (responsible for control of the various MAC's) and UN headquarters, but some is also between Jordan or Israel and UNTSO or UN headquarters. Also contains investigation files undertaken by UN military observers (UNMO) which include photographs and written reports of the incidents. Series also contains files on Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem, which was under the authority of the HJK-I-MAC chairman.

Series was created and maintained by the Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General, Andrew Cordier (in the position 1946-1961) and by the Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs, Ralph Bunche (in the position 1958-1972). Records consist of letters, memoranda, clear cables, numbered code cables, lists of observers, observer performance references, and observer guidelines, relating to the staffing of the observer contingent for UNMOGIP. Primary correspondents include: the Chief Military Observer, other UNMOGIP officials, and representatives of those missions whose countries were providing observer personnel. Arranged chronologically.

Records relating to United Nations Commission for Indonesia [UNCI]

Series consists of letters, memoranda, clear cables, numbered code cables, reports of the UNCI Principal Secretary, press releases, texts of the General Assembly President's speeches and broadcasts (copies), and United Nations documents relating to UNCI administration, as well as information on military developments and political negotiations with representatives of the Netherlands and Indonesia. The reports are addressed to the Principal Director of the Department of Security Council Affairs D. Protitch. Most of the letters are Andrew W. Cordier's copies of correspondence between the Principal Secretary J.A. Romanos and Protitch. Cordier's correspondence is primarily with Romanos. Arranged in broad subject categories.

United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) - violations log

Series consists of a log entitled "UNMOGIP reports on complaints and violations" consisting of cease-fire and border violations alleged by India or Pakistan about the other (typescript). Information includes complaint particulars and the Chief Military Observer's decisions on whether a violation had in fact occurred. Reports dated 1949-1957 are initialled by H. R. Nimmo, the Chief Military Observer. Until 1958 the log was filed in two binders (with custom-printed covers); thereafter, log pages were not necessarily filed together. Some reports from 1959-1960 and from 1964 were interfiled, some of them formatted as correspondence, with series 13 - 'Incident files relating to UNMOGIP.' Arranged chronologically.

United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) - Subject Files

Series was created, in large part, by Andrew Cordier, who served as Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General 1946-1961. Subsequently a couple of files were added by Ralph Bunche in his capacity as Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs (1958-1972). Records include correspondence, incoming and outgoing code cables, incoming and outgoing clear cables, administrative files, reports, photographs, and maps related to the activities of the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East. Documented are administrative matters, incidents, political matters, the status of UNTSO within the area, activities of the Mixed Armistice Commissions (MAC's), the establishment of Government House, truce negotiations, and regional conflicts in 1948, 1956, and 1967. Correspondents include Acting UN Mediator for Palestine Ralph J. Bunche, Assistant to the Executive Assistant Leo Malania, and UNTSO Chiefs of Staff William Riley, Vagn Bennike, E.L.M. Burns, and Carl C. von Horn. Arranged in approximate alphabetical sequence.
