In view of the increasing scope of United Nations humanitarian activities in the area, the Secretary-General on 24 August 1971 appointed Paul Marc Henry to take charge at Headquarters of the United Nations East Pakistan Relief Operation (UNEPRO).
The United Nations Relief Operation in Dacca (UNROD) was launched by the Secretary-General in December 1971, in accordance with the mandate given him by the General Assembly on 6 December 1971, which endorsed his initiative in establishing the United Nations East Pakistan Relief Operation and requested him to continue his efforts to co-ordinate international assistance to relieve the suffering of the people of the area.
1 April 1973, UNROD was succeeded by a modified organization,the United Nations Special Relief Office in Bangladesh (UNROB).
The United Nations relief operation in Bangladesh, under United Nations auspices, ended on 31 December 1973.
